Famous Shrine in the center of Tokyo

Meiji Jingu was established in 1920. This shrine is dedicated to the divine souls of Emperor Meiji and his consort Empress Shoken. It is the most visited shrine in Japan for "hatsumode" which is a tradition of the first Shinto shrine visit in New Year, wishing for the year. The land extends 700,000 square meters (7,534,737 square feet) with 170,000 trees of 245 species.

The most visited shrine for Hatsumode

Meiji Shrine is known for the number most visited for hatsumode, the first Shinto shrine visit of the Japanese New Year. It holds numerous events from sumo grand champion "ring entering" ceremonies, children's festivals to ritual services such exorcism and prayers. There are spots you can't miss. For example, "Kiyomasano-ido" is a well sunk by Kiyomasa Kato and Iris Garden ordered to be planted by Emperor Meiji as a dedication to his consort Empress Shoken. Iris garden is best to watch fro the middle to late June.
