Versadilles

Versailles is a city on western edge of the French capital city Paris, now part of the sprawling metropolis within the Ile de France region. Versailles is best known for being the site of the vast royal palace and gardens built by King Louis XIV within what was previously a royal hunting lodge. It is also one of the wealthiest cities near Paris.

Get in

■By train
・From Paris Montparnasse: Take Transilien N to Versailles Chantiers. A semi-direct train will bring you to Versailles in 12 minutes, but the walk is not very nice from that station.
・From Paris Saint Lazare: Take Transilien L to Versailles Rive Droite. You will reach Versailles in 33 minutes, with the opportunity to see (or visit) La Defense on the way. The walk from that station can be very pleasant.
・From Paris: RER C5 line, direction Versailles Rive Gauche (train called VICK), get off at Versailles Rive Gauche station. Be careful not to get off at Viroflay Rive Gauche! The name looks somewhat the same, but it is not the right station! The RER C7, direction Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, stops at Versailles Chantiers (train called SARA or SLOM). Do not take RER C4 terminating at Versailles-Chantiers (train called CIME) as this takes a long tour of the southern suburbs of Paris before reaching Versailles. This train is very slow but the station is the closest one to the Palace.

■By bus
Route 171 travels between Pont de Sèvres (at the end of Métro line 9) to Versailles. The bus journey from the station to the château takes approximately 30 min.
An extensive Bus/Minibus Full-day/Half-day Tours offer is proposed by major tour operators in Paris.

■8:00 Place du Marche Notre-Dame

Tuesday, Friday and Sunday from 7:00 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Marché Notre-Dame in Versailles, has served the needs of the population of the town of Versailles since the time of Louis XIV.

You can even get French snails, or escargots, stuffed with garlic and parsley butter and ready to be baked and served!

■9:00 Palace of Versailles

Palace of Versailles, open daily (except Mondays when the château is closed) 9AM-5:30PM November-March, 9AM-6:30PM April-October.
When the château was built, Versailles was a country village; today, however, it is a wealthy suburb of Paris, some 20 kilometres southwest of the French capital. The court of Versailles was the center of political power in France from 1682, when Louis XIV moved from Paris, until the royal family was forced to return to the capital in October 1789 after the beginning of the French Revolution. Versailles is therefore famous not only as a building, but as a symbol of the system of absolute monarchy of the Ancien Régime.

Chapelle de Royal

The present chapel of the Palace of Versailles is the fifth in the history of the palace. These chapels evolved with the expansion of the château and formed the focal point of the daily life of the court during the Ancien Régime (Bluche, 1986, 1991; Petitfils, 1995; Solnon, 1987).

Galerie des Glaces

The Hall of Mirrors (French: Grande Galerie or Galerie des Glaces) is the central gallery of the Palace of Versailles in Versailles, France.

As the principal and most remarkable feature of King Louis XIV of France's third building campaign of the Palace of Versailles (1678–1684), construction of the Hall of Mirrors began in 1678.To provide for the Hall of Mirrors as well as the salon de la guerre and the salon de la paix, which connect the grand appartement du roi with the grand appartement de la reine, architect Jules Hardouin Mansart appropriated three rooms from each apartment as well as the terrace that separated the two apartments.

Chambre de la Reine

Appartement de la Reine is also known as Queen's Apartment. This suite was originally built for Louis XIV's wife Marie-Therese. The original decoration was redone between 1729 and 1735 with renowned white and gold woodwork. It features several famous rooms including a battle gallery room, a coronation room, and the royal birthing room. Tourists are always welcome to tour through the house and gaze at the spectacles of each room.
