a cemetery in the 18th arrondissement of Paris

Cemeteries have been banned from Paris since the Cimetière des Innocents closed in 1786, as they created health hazards. In the early 19th century, new cemeteries located outside the precincts of the capital replaced all the Parisian ones: Montmartre in the north, Père Lachaise Cemetery in the east, Passy Cemetery in the west and Montparnasse Cemetery in the south.

Notable interments

・Jacques Offenbach (1819–1880), French composer of German descent
・Edgar Degas (1834–1917), famous painter, sculptor
・François Truffaut (1932–1984), French New Wave filmmaker and director
・Vaslav Nijinsky (1890–1950), Russian ballet dancer
・Heinrich Heine (1797–1856), German poet
