The building was constructed in 1903 as the residence of José Lázaro Galdiano who is a Spanish financier, journalist, publisher and art collector. He was described to be "one of the greatest patrons of culture in nineteenth century Spain". He collected over 12,000 items mostly from the Old Master and Romantic periods. At the time of his death, he bequeathed to the foundation that bears his name a considerable number of works of European art, including paintings by El Greco, Goya, Murillo and John Constable.
