Madrid icon

Plaza de Cibeles is a square that an iconic symbol of Madrid. It was originally named "Plaza de Madrid", but in 1900, the City Council named it "Plaza de Castelar". The fountain of the square was built between 1777 and 1782 by Ventura Rodriguez. It depicts the goddess in a chariot pulled by two lions. When the professional soccer team Real Madrid wins a cup, fans flock around the fountain to celebrate. One of prominent of the building at the Plaza de Cibeles is the Palacio de Buenavista. It constructed in 1777 by the Duke of Alba, which now houses the General Quarters of the Army. There are other prominent of the buildings around the square. This square is most beautiful square in Madrid.

The Cibeles Fountain

This landmark was built in 1909 by Antonio Palacios as the headquarters of the postal service. Now it became Madrid's official city hall.

The Bank of Spain

Across the Paseo de Prado from the city hall, you will see the other prominent of the building. The Bank of Spain is the national central bank of Spain. The bank is headquartered in here. This building construction started in 1884, and it is completed in 1891.

The Palacio de Linares

Opposite the Bank of Spain, there is Palacio de Linares. It was built in 1873 by a rich banker, José de Murga. A century later, the building had fallen into disrepair but in 1992 it was completely renovated. It currently houses the Casa de América, a cultural center and art gallery focused mostly on Latin American arts.
