When the capital of Spain was transferred from Toledo to Madrid in 1561, the seat of the Church in Spain remained in Toledo and the new capital had no cathedral. King Philips II wanted a cathedral for his new capital. Madrid received permission from Toledo to construct a new church in 1869 and construction began in 1883. Construction progressed slowly and even came to a complete halt during the civil war in the 1930s. It had been building neo-Gothic style. But after cathedral comes under fire, a commission change a new design that more classical elements. Almudena Cathedral complete over the years. And It was consecrated by Pope John Paul II who was pope of the Catholic Church in 1993. the King of Spain, Felipe VI hold a wedding ceremony in 2004.
