Under the Arabs and the Normans, Palermo became one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
San Giovanni degli Eremiti (St. John of the Hermits) is a church in Palermo built just like a red-domed Mosque. The nearby Cathedral was built by the Norman Bishop Walter of the Mill, but every new ruling dynasty that conquered the island added its own unique style.
The church was extensively modified during the following centuries. A restoration held around 1880 attempted to restore its original medieval appearance.
