Theatre of Dionysos is a major open-air theatre and the birthplace of European theater located on the southern slope of the Acropolis, right beside the entrance to the Acropolis itself. It was used for festivals in honor of the god Dionysus who is the god of the grape harvest, winemaking and wine. You can climb up and sit in the marble seats ringed around the stage area. In its heyday, around the 4th century BC, the theatre could seat 17,000 people.
