After passed by various owners, art-lover Jules Cantini acquired this place and opened as an art museum in 1936. The museum exhibits many important masterpieces such as Picasso, Bacon, Giancometti and Matisse and also includes an interesting display of photographs of old Marseille by leading practitioners of the medium such as Man Ray and Moholy-Nagy. The main collection is exhibited on the first floor: Fauvism, Cubism and Surrealism, and include fine pieces by Ernst, Léger, Picasso, Rothko, Miró, Le Corbusier and Kandinsky. The second floor is given over to more recent installations and collages.
