This arc is modeled by the one in the town of Orange in the south-east France. It was built in 1823 by Penchaud in order to commemorate the triumphs of the First Empire and the French Revolution. The decorations of this arc consist of intricate bas reliefs, ancient inscriptions, and a sculpture made by David d'Angers and Ramey. In the past, this arc is the landmark of Marseille for entrance. It still remains as one of the symbols of the city.
