Main church for the Bishop of Avignon

The cathedrale was primarily built in 1111. Now it's expanded and restored several times. Its style is provençal Romanesque, with touches influenced by Greek and Roman architecture. It's otagonal form with a gilded statue of the Virgin Mary (1859)on the top of the church and is richly decorated with Romanesque interiors. Many of the inner chapels were added in the early 14th century during the papacy of John XXII, the second of the Avignon Popes. Some religious events take place here on the occasion of ordinations, chrismal mass, and feasts. Mass is celebrated every moning.
