: Encounter Experience cultural For couple Maniac For Travel alone For SeniorIts original church was built in 1210 as a lookout of the city. Today's church of Romano-Byzantine-style had been built in 1853 with 154 meters (505 feet) high topped by a gilded bronze statue of the Virgin and Child added in 1870. The basilica shows Marseille's long history: decorations, including anchor motifs, images of ships and displays in the outer corridors. Its interior is brilliantly embelished with mosaic and multicolored marble on the back of golden ceiling from main altar to every arch. Now the basilica has some roles such as lighthouse, fortress, and sacred pilgrimage site for Assumption Day (every 15th August).
