The face of huge stone smiling gently.

The ruins of Siem Reap's Bayon temple are second only to Angkor Wat in popularity.
It is located in the center of Angkor Thom, and is surrounded by 8m high laterite walls.
It means "beautiful tower" in Khmer.
It is a Buddhist temple and was built from around the end of the 12th century by Jayavarman VII.
However, as Hinduism flowed into the Angkor dynasty later, the entire temple was changed to Hindu.

There is a tower about 43 meters high in the center, surrounded by a double corridor.
There is a complex maze, and unexpectedly as you enter, there are places like the underground that do not receive any light.
The main attractions are the two layers of reliefs drawn on the corridors, and a huge stone called "The Serenity" with stone faces that was built in the tower of the terrace.
The scale is smaller than Angkor Wat, and you must plan to carefully for sufficient time to see so many temples.

There is a tendency for tourists to concentrate in the morning, because of the direction of sunlight is the ideal time to take pictures.
It can be extremely crowded because it is a popular spot.
After 3 pm there will be comparatively less people, if you want to avoid the crowds.
It is recommended to employ a guide if you want to see and understand the highlights.
There is the service to go around a temple on an elephant in morning, it costs 15USD per person.

The serenity of the stone faces

It is said that the human face stone is imitating Bodhisattva in general.
But opinions differ, with the fact that it is wearing a crown of leaves, with the meaning of the warrior,
and some say it is the idolization of a deified Jayavarman VII.
Facial expressions, if you look up from the bottom, or down from the top of the tower, are different, which gives an interesting atmosphere.
You will feel the mystery of the expression having both strength and gentleness.

The outer gallery

The reliefs of Angkor Wat often represent religion and politics, and the lives of ordinary people, all of which are drawn at Bayon.
For example, women are cooking in the rear, and children are helping.
Family situations have also been drawn, and a depiction of battle with the army of Champa.
It is interesting to look at, there are works of construction, work of the merchant,
scenes of games such as chess, all a record of the circumstances at the time.
